I’m finally turning a new page on the STEP blog. I must admit I’ve been discouraged by lack of participation by our parents. But I’ve decided to blog for myself -after all that is what the original idea of blogging is about. Its a (web) log, so I’m just going to get on with it. Even if it means its just Ken Schwarz and I talking to each other. I’ll continue to report on things the kids are doing in STEP at NYMC and continue to show the site to interested applicants and supporters of the program.

KEN SCHWARZ HAS ISSUED THIS APPEAL (I’m a few days late in posting it here, but it is near the deadline for posting so here it is:)
Dear STEP Parents and Students:
It’s time for me, the parent of a STEP graduate, to make a contribution to your blog. Right now, the second most important thing any of you can do is to vote. Our country is at a crossroads. A new order can begin. The old way of doing things can be changed. It can and will transform your lives. I believe that yesterday Colin Powell said something like that on Meet the Press. It has not been lost on me that in this potentially transformative election my daughter, Cary, will be voting for the first time. So she will have the power to help to bring about the change we so desperately need.
But the most important thing you can do is to involve your children in the election. Have you talked to them about what is at stake? If you have, you may have come away surprised at how informed they are. My sense is that our children are very interested in this election. So talk to them about it. Who knows, you may learn something from them.
But the most important thing is that our children’s political involvement not end with the presidential election. It is going to be their world. We all want that world to be a good as possible. That will not happen if they do not become involved with the people who represent them. If I were you, I would make a list of all of the elected officials that represent you. Who is your town supervisor? Who is your congressperson? Who is your village mayor? Who are the members of your local legislative bodies? Who is your representative to the Westchester County Legislature? Whether you realize it or not, our schools do not provide such information to our children. If it does not come from you it will not come at all.
I would take it a step further. I would contact our elected officials and arrange for them to meet briefly with your children. When I vote I would take my child to show them what it’s like. By giving you children such hands-on involvement it may help to transform what today is only an abstract notion into something that is real.
So please vote. Please involve your children. Please let them know that you can and will be influenced by what they tell you. Here’s hoping for a better America for all of us. It is certainly about time.
